Yacht Charter Options: Bareboat, Skippered, or Fully Crewed Charter?
Are you thinking about about chartering a sailing catamaran or monohull sailboat for your next vacation? Chartering a yacht involves renting a yacht for a specific period, typically for recreational purposes like cruising, sailing, or vacationing. There are three primary types of yacht charters to consider: bareboat charter, boat rental with skipper, and fully crewed charter.
Bareboat Chartering: You Are the Captain!
Bareboat chartering is when you rents a boat and take the helm yourself, making it a highly personalized and adventurous experience. In this arrangement, the charterer is entirely responsible for the operation of the boat, from navigating the open waters to anchoring in serene bays. It is generally best suited for experienced sailors with specific sailing expertise and a solid understanding of navigation, as the autonomy of bareboat chartering demands a high level of competence which needs to be documented by both a bareboat sailing certification and sea time, as well as demonstrated to the charter operator at vessel checkout.
Since Bareboat chartering requires significant sailing skills, charter operators often provide charterers with the option to hire a captain, which the charterer is required to choose freely. While this is the most common charter arrangement, it comes with high responsibilities for the charterer.
Experience Level: Bareboat chartering requires significant sailing skills.

Skippered Yacht: Sailing with a Professional Captain
A skippered charter is a middle ground between bareboat and crewed charters. Skippered charters offer the services of a professional skipper and takes full responsibility for navigation, safety protocols, and overall boat management. A licensed captain is hired to sail the boat and remains in complete control of the vessel. With skippered charters, you are renting a yacht with a permanently assigned captain who will handle the vessel on your behalf.
Skipper hire is an option for all of Charisma Sailing’s charter yachts. Our instructional charters are under the care of experienced US Sailing certified instructors, who can teach guests how to sail - from basics to full certifications.
Experience Level: Skippered charters are well-suited for individuals and families with little to no prior sailing skills.

Crewed Charters: The Ultimate Luxury Experience
Crewed charters take things a step further, elevating your sailing vacation to a whole new level of luxury and convenience. These charters involve renting a larger motor or sailing yacht with a professional crew, often exclusively assigned to your particular vessel. When you choose this option, you'll have a seasoned Captain and a skilled Chef/Mate joining you on board throughout your journey. Together, they form your dedicated team, taking care of everything from planning the route and navigating the seas to preparing sumptuous meals and serving refreshing beverages, ensuring your comfort and hospitality needs are met.
Experience Level: Crewed charters are the perfect choice for those who are not experienced in sailing and self-provisioning, or simply want to relax and enjoy the journey without any sailing responsibilities.
